Good character and the Socratic Method

Professor Sari Nusseibeh is working on a new book, titled The Scout, or Philosophy and Us. The book, written in Arabic, explores the application of the philosophical method, particularly in the context of the Palestinians. In this podcast, we will bring sections of the book, translated into the spoken Palestinian dialect. We will then enter into a conversation with Professor Nusseibeh on the respective section and beyond. The idea of the podcast is to dig deep into the concepts and ideas of the book and to generate a discussion among Arabic speakers worldwide.

In this fifth episode, we will present a segment from the book’s chapter on the main aspects of the philosophical method, translated into the spoken Palestinian dialect. We then engage in a conversation with Professor Sari Nusseibeh about the main elements of the philosophical method, with a focus on the importance of having good character. To do that, we discuss the works of Socrates and Plato, exploring what insights can be gained from the Socratic method today to foster deeper understanding and persuade others (winning others over), rather than merely "winning over them."

حسن الخلق والحوار السقراطي: 

يعمل البروفيسور سري نسيبة على كتاب جديد بعنوان "الكشّاف، أو نحن والفلسفة". يركّز الكتاب، المكتوب باللغة العربية، على كيفية توظيف المنهج الفلسفي، خصوصًا في السياق الفلسطيني. في هذه البودكاست، سنقدّم مقاطع من الكتاب مترجمة إلى اللهجة الفلسطينية المحكية، ثم ندخل في حوار مع البروفيسور نسيبة حول المقطع المعروض وما يتعدّاه. فكرة البودكاست هي الغوص عميقًا في مفاهيم وأفكار الكتاب وإطلاق نقاش بين الناطقين بالعربية في جميع أنحاء العالم.

في هذه الحلقة الخامسة، سنعرض مقطعًا من فصل الكتاب الذي يتناول محاور النهج الفلسفي، بعد أن تُرجم إلى اللهجة الفلسطينية المحكية. ثم ندخل في حوار مع البروفيسور سري نسيبة حول محاور النهج الفلسفي، مع التركيز على أهمية التحلّي بحُسن الخُلق. ولتحقيق ذلك، نناقش أعمال سقراط وأفلاطون، مستكشفين ما يمكن أن نستفيده اليوم من المنهج السقراطي لتعزيز فهم أعمق وإقناع الآخرين (كسب قلوبهم وعقولهم)، بدلاً من مجرد "الانتصار عليهم".
